    • PURPOSE:To improve liquid maintainability and liquid absorptivity, by using glass fibers in the main, containing thermoplastic organic fibers, and attaching fibers to themselves with water-glass adhesives. CONSTITUTION:Glass fibets are used in the main, thermoplastic organic fibers are also contained, and the fibers are attached to themselves with water-glass adhesives. Separators in a storage battery, whose main constituents are glass fibers, are preferrably composed of main smalldiameter glass fibers of 2mum or less in average diameter, 0-35 wt % large-diameter glass fibers of 10-30mum in average diameter, and 0-30 wt % middle-diameter glass fibers above 2 mum and below 10 mum in average diameter. The suitable content of the small- diameter glass fibers is 60 wt % or more out of the whole glass fibers, especially 65wt % or more being preferrable. water glass, and besides inorganic adhesives containing water glass are appropriate for the water-glass adhesives. Because the glass fibers hence being in the main, liquid absorptivity and liquid maintainability can be improved, particularly the liquid maintainability becoming excellent under a pressurized atmosphere.

    • PURPOSE:To increase the level of a liquid electrolyte held in the separator by filling the spaces between glass fibers with minute particles to minimize the diameter of the holes in the separator and using a water glass to bound the fibers together. CONSTITUTION:After fibers principally consisting of alkali-containing silicate glass fibers and a powder principally composed of an alkali-containing silicate glass powder are dispersed in water of a given pH level for a given time while avoiding the breakage of the fibers as far as possible, the thus prepared dispersion is formed into a sheet by a wet method. After that, the sheet is heated to a given temperature to bound the glass fibers and the glass powder together by the water glass existing on their surface, thereby making a separator. Since the minute particles of the powder encroach upon the spaces between the fibers during the above process, only holes with reduced diameter distribute in the entire separator. Consequently, it is possible to increase the level of a liquid electrolyte held in the separator.
