    • PURPOSE:To obtain a measuring probe of Mn activity in a molten metal which is inexpensive and has a high measurement success rate and excellent responsiveness, by providing a coating with a cut part formed on the circumference thereof being perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of a solid electrolyte on the occasion when the outer surface of the solid electrolyte is coated with an Mn oxide. CONSTITUTION:A standard electrode 2 is sealed in and fixed inside a solid electrolyte 1 having one end shaped in a closed tube, with a standard electrode fixing member 3, and a standard electrode lead 4 is taken out from the standard electrode 2, while the end of the electrolyte 1 is sealed hermetically with a sealing agent 6. A coating 5 coats the whole outer surface of the electrolyte 1. Since a gap is formed between the electrolyte 1 and the coating 5 in a molten metal on the occasion of forming the coating 5, measuring precision and waveform stability are lowered. In order to absorb the gap caused by a difference in the thermal expansion between them, a part of the coating 5 is cut. As for the shape the cut, it is advisable to form it on the circumference being perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, and a to the position of the cut, it is advisable to provide it in a range of 5 to 10mm from the fore end of the closed side of the electrolyte 1.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the measuring precision and the measurement success rate of a probe by mixing an iron oxide beforehand in a coating made of an oxide of a solute element to be measured or a composite oxide containing the oxide of the solute element to be measured. CONSTITUTION:A standard electrode 2 is disposed in contact with a solid electrolyte 1 and a standard electrode lead 3 is taken out, while a coating 4 is disposed on the opposite side of the electrolyte 1 to the standard electrode 2. When the coating 4 comes into contact with a molten metal 5, a layer 6 of local equilibrium being different from the metal 5 is formed. In the layer 6 of equilibrium, an oxide of a solute element to be measured and the solute element to be measured in the molten iron reach equilibrium, and the activity of oxygen in the layer 6 of equilibrium has a value corresponding to the activity of the solute element to be measured in the molten iron. When a difference in oxygen potential between the standard electrode 2 and the layer 6 of equilibrium is measured between the lead 3 and a measuring electrode 7, accordingly, a superpower corresponding to the activity of the solute element to be measured in the molten iron is obtained by a potentiometer 8.
