This steel is subjected to solid solution heat treatment at the temp. between a temp. satisfying T=8065/(3.55-logX)-373( deg.C) and X=(C+N×12/14)×(Nb+Ta/2)(%) and a temp. of A4 transformation point where austenite is stable or 1280 deg.C. subsequently, without cooling down to a temp. not higher than the A3 transformation point, carbonitride precipitation heat treatment is performed at a temp. between the A3 transformation point and 1050 deg.C. Then, the steel is cooled down to a temp. not higher than the A3 transformation point and formed into martenstic structure. Successively, tempering treatment is carried out.

By gassolid reaction of the steel member and the mixture of SiCl4 containing nonoxidizing gas, a corrosion resistant steel member is obtained applicable to a severe corrosive environment such as boiling sulfuric acid or the like without any restriction of the kind of steel member and the figure, without any complicated layer structure, nor with any deterioration of the surface quality.

Further, by adding at least one of 0.1 to 2 wt.% of molybdenum and 0.1 to 1.5 wt.% of aluminum, an alloy having good, water-resisting adhesion, the good cathode separation resistance and satisfying the conditions of the mechanical characteristics such as toughness or the like, can be obtained.
