SOLUTION: Yttrium oxide fine powder is produced by neutralizing an aqueous solution of an acidic salt of yttrium with an aqueous solution of a basic salt containing carbonic acid, aging the produced precipitate and using the obtained yttrium carbonate as the mother salt. Al ions, precipitating Al(OH)3 , separating and removing the mother liquor and subjecting the precipitate to washing with water, dispersion in an org. solvent, drying and calcining at a specified temp. SOLUTION: A basic aq. soln. such as an NH3 soln. is added to an acidic aq. soln. contg. Al ions prepd. by dissolving Al2 (SO4 )3 .18H2 O, etc., in water to adjust the acidic aq. soln. to pH5-10 and Al(OH)3 is precipitated by holding at about >=50 deg.C. This precipitate is separated by filtration, washed several times with distilled water and dispersed in a hydrophilic org. polar solvent such as propanol, most of the water is removed by filtration and the precipitate is dried in a flow of gaseous N2 and calcined at 1,000-1,400 deg.C in the air to obtain the objective high purity Al2 O3 , powder. A basic aq. soln. is added to an acidic aq. soln. contg. Y and Al ions and a precipitate is formed and treated as mentioned above to obtain the objective high purity Y-Al garnet powder.
