    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas which as phosphorus (P) added into engine oil poisons Pd, contains an alkaline earth metal, such as Ba, in catalyst layers for inhibiting P poisoning, contains a Rh-doped Ce-containing oxide in an upper layer, contains Pd in a lower layer in a state where the Pd is supported on various support materials, and contains the alkaline earth metal in both upper and lower layers, whereby deactivation of the Pd in the lower layer can be inhibited while ensuring the activity of the Rh in the upper layer.SOLUTION: The mass ratio of a content of the alkaline earth metal contained in the upper layer to a content of the alkaline earth metal contained in the lower layer is adjusted to 1:4 to 9:10, whereby the deactivation of the Pd in the lower layer can be inhibited while ensuring the activity of the Rh in the upper layer.

The catalyst layer 2 includes alkali metal that is integrated to the particles of the powder of the Ce-Zr type complex oxide in a manner of being supported on the particle surface thereof and is unevenly distributed on the powder of the Ce-Zr type complex oxide, with the catalytic metal and the alkali metal disposed close to each other on the surface of the particles of the powder of the Ce-Zr type complex oxide.
