    • PURPOSE:To restrict generation of output reducing or the like of an internal combustion engine to the minimum by moving the opening position of a valve to the full opening or full closing position, when an abnormal condition is detected on a detecting part for detecting the opening position of the valve, or on a driving part for driving the valve. CONSTITUTION:In an intake air passage of an engine 1, a valve 5 which is driven to be open/close is provided so as to control the length of the passage long or short. In this case, the target opening value of a valve 5 corresponding to the operating condition of the engine 1, which is detected by an intake air quantity sensor 2 and a crank angle sensor 4, is memorized beforehand in a controller 8. On the other hand, a real valve opening value is found out on the basis of a valve opening detection signal from a valve opening detection circuit 7 composed of a Hall sensor or the like, and thereby comparison with the valve opening and the target opening is carried out. As a result, a driving circuit 6 composed of a DC motor or the like is driven when the actual valve opening is different from the target opening. When it is judged that the valve driving circuit 6 or the valve opening detecting circuit 7 is in an abnormal condition, the opening position of a valve 5 is controlled to the full closing or full opening position.

    • PURPOSE:To increase the exhaust gas purification efficiency due to a catalyst by deflecting the air-fuel ratio of the combustion gas introduced into the catalyst in vibration form in the vicinity of the theoretical air-fuel ratio and allowing the output of an exhaust gas component detecting means to include the result information in the catalytic purifying action. CONSTITUTION:The first signal whose increase/decrease direction changes on the basis of the variation of the output which sharply varies in the vicinity of the theoretical air-fuel ratio of an O2 sensor 17 which is installed inside or on the downstream side of a catalyst is outputted by a generating means 45. Further, the second signal which vibrates with the cycle shorter than the cycle of the output variation cycle of the O2 sensor 17 on the basis of the engine operation state is outputted by a generating means 46, and the third signal is generated by superposing both signals by a generating means 47, and the air-fuel ratio of the combustion gas which is introduced into the catalyst on the basis of this signal is controlled so as to vibrate in the vicinity of the theoretical air-fuel ratio. Thus, the output of the O2 sensor 17 becomes the output which is obtained by receiving the result information of the catalytic purifying action, and the limit cycle in the air-fuel ratio feedback control becomes large apparently. Thus, the exhaust gas purification efficiency can be increased to the max.

    • PURPOSE:To eliminate generation of output reduction or the like of an internal combustion engine caused by disagreement between target and actual valve opening values, by not judging trouble in a detecting part for detecting the position of the valve, or a driving part for driving the valve, when the opening position of the valve is at an initial opening position. CONSTITUTION:In an intake air passage of an engine 1, a valve 5 which is driven to be open/close is provided so as to control the length of the passage long/short. In this case, the target opening of a valve 5 corresponding to the operating condition of the engine 1, which is detected by an intake air quantity sensor 2 and a crank angle sensor 4, is removed beforehand in a controller 8. On the other hand, a real valve opening is found out on the basis of a valve opening detecting signal from a valve detecting circuit 7, and then comparison with the vale opening and the target opening is carried out. As a result, a valve driving circuit 6 is driven when the actual valve opening is differnt from the target opening. Only when the valve 5 is at a position to which it is removed from an initial position (a full closing position), trouble in the valve driving circuit 6 or the valve opening detecting circuit 7 is judged.
