    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of the entire discharge cells on a panel being unable to be driven normally, because the entire panel emits light due to discharging that is generated at impressing of a priming pulse prior to a write period and an erase pulse, after a sustaining period to lower contrast and also because erroneous discharge occurs because a discharge margin is narrowed, in such a manner that the pitches of the discharge cell are narrowed accompanying high-definition. SOLUTION: A stepped pulse waveform of at least two or more steps is used at impressing of an initializing pulse, prior to a write period and an erase pulse after a sustained period, to suppress light emission due to unwanted discharges, and a stepped pulse waveform of at least two or more steps is used for a write pulse and a sustaining pulse, so as to suppress delays in discharges; thereby, efficiency and contrast are improved significantly and a high quality PDP is realized.
