    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cutting glass with a side pressure to produce optical element raw materials such as lenses, enabling to simultaneously cut a brittle material such as a glass rod at specified cross sections and surely obtain only the prescribed number of columnar glass materials having smooth cut surfaces approximating to mirror surfaces and little in the irregularity of the weights. SOLUTION: This method for cutting glass with a side pressure comprises repeatedly disposing streaks 2 to be cut with an indenter on the outer surface of a glass bar comprising a brittle material at equal or different distances with different loads, loading a side pressure to the glass rod through a pressure medium in a device which has a side pressure-transmitting cylinder 3 used for inserting the glass bar and comprising a material small in the Young's modulus, the pressure medium filled in a space between the glass rod and the transmission cylinder 3 and a holding member 8 used for restraining the axial deformation of the transmission cylinder 3 and constituting a pressure chamber, and thus cutting the glass rod along the streaks 2.

The cutting means applies a side pressure P to the glass bar along the outer periphery of the transmitting cylinder 3 to cut the glass bar along the plural marks 2 formed on the glass bar 1.

In the body mold, a plurality of ventilation holes 4b for communicating the perforated holes and open air are formed in the horizontal direction to the axial center, and a connecting hole 4c for connecting at least a portion of the ventilation holes 4b is formed.
