    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hot water heater with high facility and high safety by assuredly feeding water during initial operation and detecting water during ordinary operation. SOLUTION: A hot water heater comprises a burner part 22, a hot water heat exchanger 24 for heating hot water, a water tank 25 for storing hot water, a first water electrode 27a and a second water electrode 27b different in height of detection in the water tank 25, a first water detecting means 31 and a second water detecting means 33 for detecting the presence or absence of water in accordance with the signals of the water electrodes 27a and 27b, a hot water circulating means 35 and a test operation instructing part 36 for instructing a test operation. During an ordinary operation, water is detected between the electrodes 27a and 27b and the earth of the casing of a main body. Upon instruction from the test operation instructing part 36, the preset operation of the water detecting means 31 is stopped so that the water is detected between the first water electrode 27a and the second water electrode 27b of the water detecting means 31 stopping the operation.
