摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for sulfonation reaction, enabling a sulfonating gas to be efficiently absorbed into a raw material liquid phase in a batch-wise production process, and provide an apparatus for the same. SOLUTION: This method for sulfonation reaction comprises blowing a sulfonating gas into a raw material liquid phase 2 so that the gas-liquid mixed phase 2A has a sulfonating gas concentration of 5-67 vol.%. The sulfonation reaction is preferably carried out by using the sulfonating gas having an SO3 concentration of 1-30 vol.%, and blowing the sulfonating gas at a blow-off speed of >=10 m/sec through holes 5(b) of a gas-charging pipe 5, wherein the gas-charging pipe 5 has a gas-purger 5(a) equipped with the holes 5(b) having each hole diameter of 0.5-10 mm, and the total sum of areas of the holes 5(b) is 1-50 mm2 per kg of the raw material liquid phase.

SOLUTION: This α-sulfofatty acid alkylester salt composition contains >=80 wt.% α-sulfofatty acid alkylester salt (A) having the composition of the carbon chain length of R in a range shown by a shaded portion in the figure in a compound of the formula: R CH(SO3 M)COOR [R is a 12-16C alkyl or a 12-16C alkenyl; R is a 1-6C alkyl; M is an alkali (alkaline earth), or a (substituted) ammonium], based on the total amount of the component (A) and α-sulfofatty acid alkylester di-salt. The composition is obtained e.g. by sulfonating a corresponding fatty acid ester (X) with SO3 gas of 1-2 mol fold of the (X) at a freezing point of the (X) to the freezing point +100 deg.C temperature, then aging at 70-120 deg.C temperature, then breaching with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an alcohol, and further neutralizing with a corresponding metal salt, ammonia, etc.

The sulfonating agent is preferably used in about 0.8 to 2.0-fold molar quantity in terms of molar ratio per unit of styrenic monomer based on the polymer compound as a raw material, e.g. a styrenic polymer.
