SOLUTION: The method for producing an ether-dicarboxylic acid or its salt comprises a reaction of a diol expressed by general formula (I) (wherein, n is an integer of 1-10) with an α-halocarboxylic acid expressed by general formula (II) [wherein, R is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or a (substituted) aryl; and X is a halogen] or its salt in the presence of an alkali alkoxide. An ether- dicarboxylic acid expressed by formula (III) (wherein, R and n are defined as above) is obtained by the method.

SOLUTION: This method for producing an α,α-bis(hydroxymethyl) carboxylic acid represented by formula (I) (wherein, R is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or an aryl) is characterized by comprising a step where a mixture containing the α,α-bis(hydroxymethyl)carboxylic acid is subjected to crystallization in the presence of 1-2 wt.% water in an acetic ester. The bis(hydroxymethyl)carboxylic acid obtained by the production method of the present invention is useful for a raw material of polyurethane, polyester, alkyd resin, or the like.
