    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce an ultrafine fiber composed of a thermoplastic resin. SOLUTION: The ultrafine fiber is produced by passing a thermoplastic resin through a heating and melting step of irradiating the thermoplastic resin with a laser beam 7, heating and melting the thermoplastic resin, an electrospinning step of acting a voltage on a melted part of the thermoplastic resin and extending the thermoplastic resin into a fiber form and a collecting step of collecting the extended fiber in a collector 8. In the method, the extending fiber is heated near the melting point (or softening point) of the thermoplastic resin to carry out spinning in the electrospinning step. Furthermore, in the electrospinning step, the fiber having an average fiber diameter of 5 μm or less is particularly whipped at a frequency of 100 times/s or more and at an amplitude of 10 mm. In the collecting step, the collector is moved to the front, the rear, the right and the left at a frequency of 1/3,000 or less based on the whipping frequency to collect the fiber.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce ultrafine fibers composed of a thermoplastic resin in high energy efficiency and workability.
      SOLUTION: An ultrafine fiber is produced by a heating and melting step to melt a thermoplastic resin by the irradiation with laser light 7 and an electrostatic spinning step to apply an electric potential to the molten part of the thermoplastic resin and collect the extended fiber with a collector 8. The application of electric potential to the molten part of the thermoplastic resin may be carried out by applying the potential between an electrode 2 for applying electric charge to the thermoplastic resin and the collector 8. As an alternative, a linear resin 1 capable of receiving laser beams 7 from a plurality of radiation directions is inserted into a hole 3 on the electrode part 2 and continuously supplied to the thermal melting part. A laser beam having a beam diameter of 2-50 times the average diameter of the linear resin can be used as the laser light 7. Ultrafine fibers having an average fiber diameter of ≤5 μm (especially 50-1,000 nm) can be produced by the method.
