SOLUTION: An optically active 1,4-pentanediol is produced by asymmetrically reducing inexpensively available 5-hydroxy-2-pentanone. An optically active 1-substituted-2-methylpyrrolidine is produced by further sulfonylating the optically active 1,4-pentanediol to convert it to an optically active sulfonate compound and subsequently reacting the compound with an amine.
