    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heating furnace and a heating method by which the temperature distribution in the longitudinal direction of a metallic material can be controlled more precisely while improving energy efficiency by using a heat storage type burner. SOLUTION: In the heating furnace 1, while conveying a metallic material F arranged with the furnace width direction as a longitudinal direction to the furnace length direction, the metallic material is heated. The heating furnace comprises: heat storage type burners 2 plurally arranged along the respective furnace length directions of the furnace side walls on both the sides in the furnace width direction so as to be confronted each other in the furnace width direction and making a pair in alternating combustion so as to form combustion flame in an alternating manner; and at least one or more non-heat storage type burners 10 arranged in the heating furnace in a space in the heat storage type burners relatively adjoining in the furnace length direction, and independently forming combustion flame respectively independently so as to locally heat the metallic material. The non-heat storage type burner is arranged in a range from the position of the 1/3 of the furnace length on the extraction side in the heating furnace to the extraction port OUT of the heating furnace.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the abrasion resistance and ductility of a rail, by controlling a component of steel, a ratio of an opposing force in a finish rolling process and a heat treatment condition after the finish rolling process to make a structure of a head portion of the rail fine and control the hardness to a predetermined range. SOLUTION: A steel slab comprises, by mass%, 0.65 to 1.20% C, 0.05 to 2.00% Si, 0.05 to 2.00% Mn and the balance Fe with unavoidable impurities. The method for manufacturing the pearlite-based rail includes at least the steps of rough-rolling the slab and finish-rolling a rail. In the above finish rolling step, the manufacturing method includes rolling the rail at a temperature range of 900°C or lower but the Ar3 transformation temperature or the Arcm transformation temperature or higher on the surface of the head portion of the rail, at a cumulative area-reduction rate of 20% or more, and at an opposing force ratio of 1.25 or more; and then acceleratingly or naturally cooling the surface of the head portion of the rail after having been finish-rolled down to 550°C at highest, at a cooling velocity of 2 to 30°C/sec. And the caliber for forming additional thickness is provided to the horizontal rolls. In this way, since the control of the additional thickness and inside width of web is enabled in an intermediate process, the shapes of a wide range of sizes are manufactured without changing rolls.
