    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) whose solubility in water is significantly changeable enough with a slight temperature change e.g. so as to be low in solubility in low-temperature water but quickly dissolve in hot water, and to provide a method for producing the PVA. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer comprises a transesterification reaction between a polyvinyl ester polymer and an alcohol is advanced in a reaction mixture comprising the polyvinyl ester polymer, the alcohol and a basic compound, the polymer at least part of which is transesterified is deposited from the reaction mixture, and the transesterification reaction is advanced further in the resultant reaction mixture containing the deposited polymer.
