    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the migration of harmful components in the exhaust gases of a carbonization furnace to a sludge by heating the exhaust gases and effectively utilizing these gases as a part of a dry heat source of the highly hydrous sludge. SOLUTION: The dehydrated cake of the sewerage sludge segmented by a constant quantity feeder 12 is dried by a drying machine 13 and is fed into the carbonization furnace 15 through a dry sludge hopper 14 and is carbonized. The carbonized cake is stored in a carbide hopper 16 and is subjected to activation treatment, by which active carbon is produced. The exhaust gases from the drying machine 13 subjected to dust removal by dust removing equipment 19 and the exhaust gases of 500 to 800 deg.C from the carbonization furnace 15 are introduced into a heat exchanger 21. As a result, the exhaust gases of the drying machine 13 are heated to 300 to 600 deg.C and a part thereof is circulated as an auxiliary heat source of the drying machine 13 to the drying machine 13. On the other hand, the remaining exhaust gases are introduced as the auxiliary heat source of the carbonization furnace 15 into the carbonization furnace 15 and are subjected to combustion deodorization in the carbonization furnace 15. The exhaust gases after the heat exchange by the heat exchanger 21 are sent to the exhaust gas treatment equipment 22 where the dust and harmful substances are removed. The exhaust gases are then released through a second induced draft fan 23 to the atmosphere from a chimney 24.
