    • PURPOSE:To obtain an acicular crystal whisker having high purity and high aspect ratio by using a carbon black having prescribed properties as a raw material for carbon component and reacting the carbon raw material with a silicon component raw material in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:A carbon black satisfying the following conditions is used as a carbon component raw material. The specific surface area determined by nitrogen adsorption is /g, the ratio of the equivalent particle diameter of the primary particle to the average particle diameter is >=1.3 and the standard deviation of the particle diameter distribution of the primary particle is >=25nm. The equivalent particle diameter can be determined from the above nitrogen-adsorption specific surface area and the average particle diameter is determined from a photograph taken by transmission-type electron microscope. The above carbon component raw material is made to react with a silicon component raw material at >=1200 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst in a non- oxidizing atmosphere.

    • PURPOSE:To readily separate the residual silicon component raw material from formed whiskers by using SiO2 powder or a mixture thereof with Si powder as a silicon component raw material for thermal reaction with a powdery carbon component raw material in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:SiO2 powder alone or a mixture thereof with Si powder is used as a silicon component raw material. The silicon component raw material is thermally reacted with a powdery carbon component raw material in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to form silicon carbide whiskers. The residual part of the aforementioned powdery silicon component raw material is calcined by the above-mentioned method to form lumps, which can be readily separated and removed from the whiskers without using an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid that is a poison. In the aforementioned reaction, although addition of the Si to the SiO2 is highly effective in accelerating the synthetic reaction, addition of too much Si deteriorates a calcined state of the silicon component raw material. Thereby, shape is readily lost in separation from the formed whisker cake.
