    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron-base powdery mixture with which the machinability can be improved without bringing about the deterioration of mechanical characteristic of a sintered material.
      SOLUTION: In the iron-base powdery mixture mixing the iron-base powder, powder for alloy, powder for improving the machinability and further, lubricant, as the powder for improving the machinability, manganese sulfide powder and further, calcium phosphate powder and/or hydroxyapatite powder are added. The content of the powder for improving the machinability is made to be the total 0.1-1.0 mass% to the total content of the iron-base powder, powder for alloy and the powder for improving the machinability. The calcium phosphate powder is desirable to use one or more kinds selected among tricalcium phosphate, calcium hydrogen phosphate and calcium dihydrogen phosphate. Further, a part or the whole of the iron-base powder can be used as the iron-base powder applying a segregation-preventive treatment, in which the powder for alloy and/or the powder for improving the machinability, are stuck on the surface with a binder.

      SOLUTION: In the improvement of a powder metallurgy technique where raw material powder for powder metallurgy is packed into a die, and is compressed to form the compact, water of 0.01 to 2.0 mass% is added to the raw material powder. In this case, the addition of water is performed preferably by spraying to the metal powder or mixing therein. It can be also performed by bringing the raw material powder into contact with water vapor or with a gas having a dew point higher than the temperature of the raw material powder, or by passing the gas into the layer of the raw material powder.

In this way, the holes in the sintered compact can be reduced, intermittent impact to a tool is reduced, and the service life of the tool is prolonged. Further, a part or the whole of the iron-base powder can be used as the iron-based powder applying a segregation-preventive treatment, in which the powder for alloy and/or the powder for improving the machinability, are stuck on the surface with a binder.
