摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus that can reduce the volume of data required to implement a channel mapping function and minimize user intervention. SOLUTION: Multiple channel maps are embedded in a television signal and an appropriate channel map corresponding to particular television services used by a viewer is downloaded for use with a television receiver. Each channel map is accompanied by a channel map identifier which identifies a source of the television signal and a geographic identifier. The source of the television signal is automatically detected by monitoring the radio-frequency spectrum allocations of television stations. The geographic area identifier is determined by comparison with a geographic area identifier inputted by the user. The channel map having a channel map identifier corresponding to the detected television signal source and the geographic area identifier inputted by the user is downloaded and stored for future use. SOLUTION: Advertisements within EPG are targeted to television viewers. EPG is displayed on a television screen. Use of the EPG and a television receiver are monitored to develop a viewer profile. A plurality of advertisements are transmitted with a television signal and are selectively stored at the receiver, depending on the viewer profile, and one or more of the advertisements matching the viewer profile are displayed on the screen. Furthermore, the viewer profile is developed by using a database, from which EPG is generated, as an information source and the viewer profile is maintained in a secure file at the receiver. Use of the EPG and a television receiver is monitored to generate a viewer profile. This invention relates to the on screen interactive EPG with the advertising messages and, more particularly, to selectively supplying the advertising messages to the viewer terminal for use in the EPG. Furthermore, the viewer profile is generated by using a database from which EPG is generated as an information source, and the viewer profile is maintained in a secure file at the receiver.
