    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display cell that can be made light in weight and thin in thickness by recovering the transmittance for light of a glass substrate the surface roughness of which is increased by mechanical polishing or chemical polishing, and by reinforcing a thinned glass substrate.
      SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal display cell 110 in which a first glass substrate 111 having a lower polarizing plate 118 and a metal oxide glass film 112, a liquid crystal layer 117, a second glass substrate 114 having a metal oxide glass film 115 formed thereon, and an upper polarizing plate 119 are stacked; and a backlight unit 120 including a light guide plate 121, a diffusing plate 122 and a light source 123. The outer surfaces of the first glass substrate 111 and the second glass substrate 114 are roughened by mechanical polishing and chemical polishing. The metal oxide glass films 112, 115 include a light-transmitting organic/inorganic hybrid material having a three-dimensional crosslinked structure formed by a sol-gel reaction by hydrolysis of a metal alkoxide composition.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detergent for a liquid crystal cell which exhibits excellent performances in cleaning/removing liquid crystals deposited to the liquid crystal cell, costs low and is highly safe.
      SOLUTION: The detergent for the liquid crystal cell comprises an aqueous dispersion prepared by mixing a component (a) comprising a polyoxyethylene monostyrylphenyl ether (the amount of added ethylene oxide being 5 mole) with a component (b) comprising a polyoxyethylene isodecyl ether (the amount of added ethylene oxide being 6 mole) in a weight ratio of 1:2 and adding ion-exchanged water to the resultant mixture to adjust its concentration to 0.5 wt% in the water. The detergent for the liquid crystal cell is a nonionic detergent that exhibits excellent performances in cleaning/removing remaining liquid crystals deposited to electrode portions of the liquid crystal cell and is low corrosive.

The outside surfaces of the first and second glass substrates 111, 114 are roughened with the polishing. The metal oxide glass films 112, 115 are light transmitting films composed of an organic-inorganic hybrid material of which the three-dimensional crosslinking is formed by a sol-gel reaction due to a hydrolysis reaction of a metal alkoxide composition.
