    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a canister for accommodating radioactive substances which makes it possible both to lay out neutron shields more easily than conventional canisters for accommodating radioactive substances and to further improve the neutron shielding performance. SOLUTION: The canister C for accommodating radioactive substances in this invention is equipped with a main body 1 of the canister C for accommodating the radioactive substances and a can 2 filled with the neutron shields 4, formed separately from the main body 1 of the canister C and mounted on its bottom by non-welding. In the canister C for accommodating radioactive substances, the can 2 filled with the neutron shields 4 is post-mounted on the main body 1 of the canister C not by welding, which prevents the neutron shields 4 from degenerating due to heat and makes it possible to lay out them at the bottom without turning over the top and bottom.

SOLUTION: In the metal cask for spent fuel, the main body 11 of the trunk constituting a canister the stowing spent fuel, and an outer casing 17 placed by allowing spacing outside the main body 11 of the trunk, extend radially outward from the main body 11, and are joined by the heat-transfer fin 20A which radially extends outward from the main body 11 of the trunk and transfers heat to the outer casing 17. The heat-transfer fin 20A consists of a clad material made by combining two kinds of metal plates with each other to join them together. Moreover, one metal of the clad material is a metal material 21a of the same kind as used for the main body 11 of the trunk and the outer casing 17 and, at the same time, the other is composed of a good heat-transfer metal material 21b. The cask is so constituted that the main body 11 of the trunk is welded directly to the metal material of the same kind for the clad material mentioned above.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a canister for accommodating spent nuclear fuel which can reduce the weight of the canister by improving the heat transmission performance between internal and external cylinders, can shorten the manufacturing period of the canister and can eliminate the necessity to maintain a check valve of a vent hole.
SOLUTION: The other ends of external cylinder supporting members 13 whose one ends are fixed to an internal cylinder 1 and which are placed so as to protrude outward are fixed to the external cylinder 3. In a heat transmission member 4, a gas pool section whose cross section is shaped into a square bracket and which has a gas pool space in tip parts is formed and a neutron shielding material 2 is filled and solidified inside the square bracket. The heat transmission member 4 is located in a neutron shielding space formed by the internal cylinder 1, the external cylinder 3 and the members 13 for supporting it so that the outer surfaces of both protrusions of the member 4 can be in contact with the internal cylinder 1 or the external cylinder 3.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the production period of a cask for spent fuel transporta tion and storage and uniformalize the radiation shield capability in the axial direction of the cask for spent fuel. SOLUTION: A mixture of epoxy resin, powder neutron absorber and refractory material is injected in a laid metal mold 20 (step 14). Then, a work of primary hardening is conducted (step 15). The primary hardening is attained by heating the metal mold 20 injected with the mixture in a furnace. During the primary hardening, the viscosity of the resin in the mixture 22 in the metal mold 20 temporarily lowers and the neutron absorber and the refractory material uniformly deposit neat the bottom plate 22 of the metal mold 20. After the primary hardening, secondary hardening is conducted (step 16). A neutron shield body 5 taken out of the metal mold 20 (step 17), is attached on the outside of the inner cylinder 2 of the cask 1 for spent fuel (step 18). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
