SOLUTION: The rolling mills for sheets or plates that comprise a pair of top and bottom work rolls that roll sheets or plates, intermediate rolls that support the work rolls respectively and back-up rolls that support the intermediate rolls respectively. In the rolling method of these mills where part of the work rolls near one end is tapered and they are arranged oppositely along roll axis, there are the advantages that in rolling sheets or plates with same width, the position at the axial direction of the work rolls can be adjusted to a pre-determined position, and the crosswise thickness distribution of rolled stock can be controlled due to changing the position at the axial direction of the intermediate rolls.

Under the rolling mill, mixed oil and water are separated in a separating tank 4, and recirculated and reused. A thermal crown quantity by the thermal expansion of the work roll, is found from the measured values of plate thickness, rolling load and roll gap by the sensor 3 by a thermal crown calculating mechanism 7. From the fluctuations of these mechanical profile change and the thermal crown quantity, the work roll profile of each stand, that is, the sheet profile on the outlet side of the stand is estimated. Further, an influence coefficient of the sheet profile at the outlet side of each stand on the final stand, is learned by a learning mechanism 9, and it is used as a control parameter.

The heat which arrived at the surface is removed easily by cooling the roll. Finally, the heat flow generated in the roll chock bearings 3 is removed from the surface of the roll. The heat generated from the roll chock part is prevented from entering the inner part of the roll body part 1, as a result, the thermal expansion of the roll is stopped and the influence given by the heat generated in the roll chock is restrained effectively to the minimum.

Thus the very thin and excellently glossy sheet with good flatness can be rolled without reducing productivity.
