摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for manufacturing an optical fiber preform in which the monitoring work for the falling-down of soot and the stripping off of a surface during the formation of the soot is automated and the improvement of the operation efficiency due to unmanned operation and improvement of the safety are attained.
SOLUTION: In the method and the apparatus for manufacturing the optical fiber preform by rotating a starting member 1 composed of a glass rod supported by a chuck part around the center axis as a rotation axis and blowing a glass fine particle with flame 6 on the outer circumference of the starting member 1 along the center axis, the weight of the produced optical fiber preform is measured by a weight measuring means 10 and 11 connected to the chuck part and when the weight is smaller than the set value, it is judged that the produced optical fiber preform falls down and at least the blowing of the flame 6 is stopped.
