The time corresponding to the thyristor turn-OFF time passes and a signal GP reaches '1', and gate pulses are transmitted over a thyristor converter 151 on the positive side. When overvoltage is generated, the gate pulses of the thyristor converters 151, 152 on the positive side and the negative side are outputted in response to the polarity of an output signal VD from an overvoltage detector 26 and an output signal ZD from a zero-current detector 18.
