After setting up a printing condition, a postal card discriminating position indicating whether printing paper is a postal card or not is formed on the display means. When the printing paper required by an operator is a postal card, the display part indicating the setting direction of the postal card is displayed on the display device 2. When data to be processed by the operator are not a postal card, printing processing is directly started from the setting of a printing condition. Since the operator can check the document format of a postal card displayed on the upper right part of the display screen, misprinting due to the missetting of paper on the printer can be reduced.

When the input from the input device 3 is not given within a specific time during the generation of the document, the time of the timer 5 is over and it is informed to the controller 6. The controller 6 stores the document on the way of generation to the specific area of the temporary storage device, the overtime is restored to the initial state by the processor 6 after the end of processing and the next document generation is awaited for the input.

On the other hand, the calling side switches the communication speed of the MODEM 5 to 4800BPS by the content of the MODEM function of the called side, which have been sent, and checks the training signal which is sent in the next time. If the training is good, the MODEM function of the own station is outputted at a communication speed 2400BPS in the same way as the called side, and subsequently, the communication speed of the MODEM 5 is switched to 4800BPS and a training signal is outputted. In this way, the communication can be executed at an economical speed.
