    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system such as reducing the P-polarization component of a return light to a semiconductor laser with the simple constitution, when the dependency of transmissivity polarization, the phase difference, etc., exist in optical components such as a dichroic half prism, etc., as to an optical pickup, and to reduce further the change of detecting light quantity by a photodetector even to the change of disk retardation. SOLUTION: In the optical pickup provided with a polarization element for converting the polarized state of a light beam emitted from the semiconductor laser, the photodetector for detecting the light beam reflected from an optical disk, and a branching optical element for branching the going path optical system including the semiconductor laser and the returning path optical system including the photodetector, the polarization element is arranged in the optical path between the semiconductor laser and the branching optical element, and simultaneously the angle θ between the polarizing direction of the light beam emitted from the semiconductor laser and the optical axis of the polarization element, or the phase difference α between the transmitting polarization light in the direction of optical axis of the polarization element and the transmitting polarization light in the axial direction perpendicular thereto is arranged to set to the prescribed value.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a projection type video display device capable of securing brightness and picture quality, having high accuracy and making size small by arranging a phase difference film before and behind a polarization film and respectively sticking the polarization film and the phase difference film on a plate glass one side by one side. SOLUTION: The polarization film 20 is arranged on the incident side of a liquid crystal display element 17, and its transmission axis is at a parallel position with polarized light to be made incident on the element 17. However, in the case of making the polarized light different from polarized light arranged by a polarizing beam splitter incident on the element 17, the phase difference film 18 is arranged on the incident side of the film 20. In such a case, the film 20 and the film 18 are respectively stuck to the plate glass 19 one side by one side. The polarization film is arranged on the emitting side of the element 17, and the phase difference film is arranged on the emitting side of the polarization film when the polarized light is different from the polarized light to be made incident on the dichroic prism.

    • PURPOSE:To obscure the shadows generated on a screen by the crossing part of dichroic mirrors of a combined optical system by providing a light shielding filter which lowers the brightness of a bright part near the boundary between the shadow and the bright part around the shadow to a prescribed level or below. CONSTITUTION:The shadow is generated on the screen by the crossing part of two pieces of the dichroic mirrors 10 of the combined optical system and, therefore, the light quantity falls only in the central part A as shown by a solid line. The light shielding filter 12 is, thereupon, provided to lower the brightness in the bright part near the boundary between the shadow and the bright part around this shadow to the prescribed level or below so that the brightness distribution shown by an alternate long and short dash line is attained. The shadow generated by the crossing part of two pieces of the dichroic mirrors 10 of the combined optical system is obscured in this way.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal projector which takes the higher efficiency of heat radiation, lower cost, smaller size and remedy against dust of a liquid crystal display element into consideration.
      SOLUTION: Sheets of transparent glass having a thickness to hardly permit focusing of dust on a screen are respectively fixed and arranged on the incident surface side and exit surface side of an image display element. The liquid crystal projector which reduces the deterioration of image quality by the dust is made possible and the promotion of the heat radiating effect of the image display element is made possible by using the image display element of such configuration.
