    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a malfunction caused by the leakage of light and reflected light from another apparatus by arranging a recording medium detector and a reflection characteristic detector to face each other. SOLUTION: After printing paper 20 is extracted from a paper tray 80, the reflective characteristics of the paper 20 are measured by a measurement part 81. A darkroom box is formed by making a box including a light source and a sensor adhere to the paper 20, and a darkroom box is used also between a paper sensing plate 83 and the paper 20. When the paper 20 is not set in the tray 80, the sensor measures the sensing plate 83. Since the plate 83 is processed to absorb light and absorbs light from the light source without reflecting it, the sensor outputs a low value. In this case, the absence of the paper 20 is recognized by a printer driver. When the output of the sensor is high in value, the specification of the paper 20 from measured data and the change of printing are made possible.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a color correction adapted to a gradation reproducing capability of a device without performing a complicated calculation by using a color correction table having a small memory capacity. SOLUTION: The method for processing an image uses the color correction table obtained by forming the table of the relationship between a discrete input color signal and an output color signal corresponding to the input signal. The method comprises steps of correcting the input color signal by a signal correcting unit 12, and obtaining the discrete input color signal similar to the corrected input color signal by an approximating unit 13. A table referring unit 14 refers to the color correction table, and outputs an output signal (gradation data and switching data) corresponding to the input color signal approximated by the approximating unit. An approximating error generating unit 17 calculates the approximating error from the difference between the input and the output to the approximating unit, and stores the error in a data storage unit 15. The stored approximating error is supplied to the correcting unit 12, and used for correcting the input signal. The switching data is used for a dither process, and a dither result is added to the gradation data, thereby napidly outputting the color correction result adapted to the gradation reproducing capability of the device.

A distortion correction arithmetic section 22 applies magnification processing to the image data belonging to the distortion area in the image data, whose tilt is corrected or the image data without a tilt according to a stored pattern in a parameter storage section 18 and applies luminance correction to the data to enhance the luminance and further applies luminance correction to emphasize the edge of characters/graphics to the picture data whose luminance is corrected.
