    • PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform recording and playback characteristic by a method wherein, after a polishing and working operation in order to enhance a tape touch, individual heads constituting a thin-film multilayer head are formed to be a uniform gap depth. CONSTITUTION:A thin-film magnetic head 3 is formed in such a way that a lower-part core is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate having a difference in level taking into consideration a height (h) after a polishing and working operation or that an interlayer insulating layer 9, a coil 1 for an electromagnetic conversion and one pair of upper-part magnetic-core halves are formed on a magnetic substrate having a difference in level of a height (h) via a magnetic gap so as to be brought face to face. A face on which the upper-part cores are brought face to face is nearly at right angles to the surface of the lower-part core 5, and the surface of both upper-part magnetic-core halves is formed of an upper-part core 2 which is used as a sliding and moving face with reference to a recording medium. x0 indicates the position of a gap depth of 0, and x1 indicates the position of a prescribed gap depth. Consequently, a gap 8 from x0 up to x1 becomes an effective gap for an electromagnetic conversion. After a head formation process has been completed, a polishing and working operation is performed to form a prescribed curvature Rx in order to enhance a tape touch, and the gap depth (d) of individual heads becomes equal.
