摘要： PURPOSE:To lower the coefft. of friction to a magnetic head and to prevent the sticking of the magnetic head by coating a magnetic layer with a carbon film having adequate roughness. CONSTITUTION:A plating layer 2, a substrate layer 3 and a magnetic layer 4 are laminated on a substrate 1 and the layer 4 is coated with the carbon film 5. Metallic species of adequate grain sizes are uniformly dispersed into the surface of the film 5 and this surface is removed by plasma etching, by which the rugged surface having the adequate roughness is formed. The coefft. of friction to the magnetic head is lowered and the sticking of the magnetic head is prevented if the magnetic recording medium having the surface roughness Ra=5 to 20nm is formed by further forming a protective film 6 on the film 5.

摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain excellent durability and surface lubricity by successively laminating a hard layer and a solid lubricating layer consisting of a BN thin film contg. hexagonal BN on a magnetic thin film. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium 5 is constituted by forming the continuous magnetic thin film 3 on a disk substrate 4 and successively forming the hard carbon thin film 2 and the lubricative BN thin film 1 thereon. The thin film 1 is the BN thin film contg. the hexagonal BN and amorphous BN. The load of a floating head 23 at the time when the head 23 and the medium 5 are in contact with each other is supported by the thin film 2 and the adhesion by friction arises at the place of the thin film 1 if the medium 5 is used as a magnetic recorder. The contact area between the medium 5 and the head 23 is, therefore, small and the shearing is smaller than the shearing generated at the place of the thin film 2. Consequently, the friction force decreases and the wear is made much smaller than in the case there are no thin films 1 and 2. The generation of a head crash arising from the dust by the wear, etc., the failure in recording by the wear of the magnetic thin film and the loss of recording contents are, therefore, prevented.

Since this film is the carbon film having the respective characteristics of the sputtered film and the CVD film in combination, this disk is improved in the surface smoothness, min. cofft. of friction, stability with lapse of time and moisture resistance.
