    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which the level or retention height of tobacco in at least one retention shaft of a distributor or tobacco strand-forming machine having two or more retention shafts can efficiently be controlled, and to provide an apparatus therefor.
      SOLUTION: This method for controlling the level or retention height of the tobacco is characterized by detecting the retention heights (27, 27') of tobacco (28, 28') in retention shafts (40, 40'), and then controlling the tobacco-charging rates of a convey mechanisms (42, 42') connected to the retention shafts (40, 40') in a direction for conveying the tobacco (28, 28') with a controller (22) in response to the detected retention heights (27, 27').

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect properties of a material, by supplying two kinds of microwaves of high and low frequencies of modulation vibrations to a resonator, and evaluating detuning of the resonator caused by the presence of the material. SOLUTION: A microwave generator 3 supplies to a resonator 1 output signals of high and low frequencies f2, f1 of modulation vibrations (s) periodically switched by a frequency control device 24. An output signal from the resonator 1 influenced by a tobacco rod passing though the resonator 1, namely, resonant signals corresponding to high and low modulation values f2, f1 are converted into one d.c. voltage signal by a microwave diode 22 and supplied to a sampling apparatus 51. A synchronous apparatus 52 controls so that a voltage value of the resonator 1 is sampled at a time point when microwaves of the high and low frequency f2, f1 are supplied from the microwave generator 3 to the resonator 1, and obtains values Uf2 , Uf1 . An adder 56 generates a value 1/2(Uf2 +Uf1 )=Ug and a subtractor 57 generates a difference Uf2 -Uf1 =Ua from the output values. An evaluation apparatus 11 calculates values of a density, a mass, a humidity of the tobacco on the basis of the values.
