The compound of formula I is obtained by a method such as reacting an aldehyde of the formula R5-CHO (R5 is H, a 1-10C alkyl, a 2-10C alkenyl, a 2-10C alkadienyl or R3S-R4) with thiolactic acid of formula II, if necessary, in the presence of a catalyst, preferably in a solvent, at about 50-140 deg.C, for 10 m to 4 h to obtain a compound of formula III.

These compounds can be synthesized by reacting propylene glycol with metal Na and then with allyl bromide, are obtained as a mixture of the compound of formula I and the compound of formula II in a ratio of about 7:3, and is purified e.g. by distillation before being used.
