    • 1492784 Spot-type disc brakes; slack-adjusting GIRLING Ltd 7 Feb 1975 [19 Feb 1974] 7609/74 Heading F2E An automatic adjuster for a vehicle brake comprises an extensible strut having two coaxial parts 12, 13, in screw-threaded engagement, the inner part 13 being non-rotatable and the outer part being effectively axially fixed, a driving sleeve 14 slidable on the outer part 12 of the strut and connected thereto through a one-way drive 15, and at least one slot 19 on the driving sleeve 14 adapted to co-operate with a pin 20, the adjuster being provided with a reset member 23 which is movable axially to push the driving sleeve 14 clear of the pin 20, thus enabling the outer part 12 of the strut to be rotated in the strut-shortening direction. The expander shown in the Figure is adapted for inclusion in the floating caliper of a railway brake, and includes parts 4, 7 of a sleeve having complementary helical formations separated by a split roller bearing 8. In operation, sleeve part 7 is rotated by a headed boss 9, so the second sleeve part 4 is advanced towards a brake disc (not shown), taking with it the strut 12, 13, whose inner part 13 engages a friction pad (not shown). The driving sleeve 14 is not rotated so long as pin 20 does not move more than one slot length, but when lining wear involves excessive rotation of sleeve part 7, pin 20 rotates driving sleeve 14 slightly, but driving sleeve 14 does not rotate strut part 12. On brake release, however, sleeve 14 does rotate strut part 12 through the oneway drive 15, so strut part 13 is moved outwards by the mutual threading to take up the slack. For re-setting, the cup-shaped member 23 is pushed in to disengage driving sleeve 14 from pin 20 against spring pressure 17, whereupon strut part 12 can be rotated in the reverse direction by a pin 26 forming part of the re-set member.
