SOLUTION: An optical network includes a plurality of add/drop nodes connected to an optical ring. The optical network sometimes includes a plurality of subnets, each including a plurality of add/drop nodes connected to each subnet. The optical interconnection device also includes a distributing amplifier associated with each input port that generates a plurality of copies of the input signal received at the associated input port. Furthermore, the optical interconnection device includes a plurality of filter units that receive a copy of one or more input signals from one or more distributing amplifiers and forward traffic in selected channels of one or more received copies. In addition, the optical interconnection device includes a combining amplifier associated with each output port. Each combining amplifier receives the traffic in one or more channels forwarded by one or more filter units and combines the received traffic into an output signal outputted from the associated output port. SOLUTION: Each node passively adds and passively drops traffic from the rings. The nodes include a transport element for each ring. The transport elements include an optical splitter element and an optical combiner element. The optical splitter element passively combines an add signal including local add traffic and a first transport signal including ingress traffic from a coupled optical ring to generate a second transport signal including egress traffic for transmission on the coupled optical ring. The optical combiner element is coupled to the optical splitter element, passively splits a third transport signal including the ingress traffic to generate a drop signal including local drop traffic and a fourth transport signal including the ingress traffic. Protection switching is provided by selectively openable switches disposed in and distributed around the ring.
