    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium compatibly attaining thermal stability and reduction of a magnetic cluster size.
      SOLUTION: In the perpendicular magnetic recording medium provided with a non-magnetic substrate, a non-magnetic intermediate layer and a magnetic recording layer in this order, the magnetic recording layer has a granular structure containing Co, Cr, Pt, Si and O, the diameter of magnetic crystal grains is substantially fixed in the film thickness direction and a region on the interface side between the non-magnetic intermediate layer and the magnetic recording layer has an oxygen content more than that of a region on the surface side of the magnetic recording medium. Preferably, a soft magnetic backing layer and an underlayer are further provided and the underlayer contains Ni and Fe and has a crystal structure comprising a face-centered cubic lattice and soft magnetism.
