    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tungsten-carbon composite material not causing the peeling of its surface layer part because thermal stress is relieved even when thermal shock is applied to the top of the surface layer part, excellent in thermal shock resistance and also having high wear resistance by forming a functionally gradient tungsten-carbon layer in the surface layer part of a carbon substrate. SOLUTION: A tungsten layer 3 is formed on the top of the surface layer part 2 of a carbon substrate 1 made preferably of a carbon fiber reinforced carbon composite material and a functionally gradient tungsten-carbon layer 4 is formed in the part 2 under the tungsten layer 3. The carbon and tungsten particle contents of the layer 4 are in nearly inverse proportion to each other from the carbon substrate having 100% carbon content under the surface layer part 2 toward the tungsten layer 3 having 100% tungsten content. The tungsten particles in the surface layer part 2 form tungsten carbide films on the surfaces by reaction with carbon and the films act as a binder to tightly bond the tungsten and carbon particles.
