    • PURPOSE:To prevent an optical fiber from being damaged, by constituting the titled device so that a guide curved surface has a large radius of curvature of an extent that the optical fiber which has been bent along its surface does not leak a light, and the tip peripheral surface of a bending tool has a small radius of curvature of an extent that the bent optical fiber can make light incident or can leak it. CONSTITUTION:In a state that a bending tool 19 has been moved backward, an SM optical fiber 11 is stretched between slip clamps 15A, 15B, and clamped. Subsequently, a slide arm 33 is moved forward and the bending tool 19 is pushed in between guides 17A, 17B. The SM optical fiber 11 is slipped in the slip clamps 15A, 15B, and pushed in between the guides 17A, 17B. In this state, when light from a light source 43 is irradiated to a bent part of the SM optical fiber 11, a part of its light is made incident on the SM optical fiber 11 and transmitted in the direction as indicated with an arrow (a). In such a way, the operation is executed very easily, also the bending state is stabilized, and a damage of the optical fiber, especially, a breakage can be prevented.

    • PURPOSE:To produce inexpensively an optical element such as an optical mixing or branching filter, optical branching or coupling device, by providing a filter with a specified angle to an optical axis of the optical fiber, and a second optical fiber to the side surface of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A filter 13 comprising optical glass 13a and metallic film 13b is inserted to a groove 11a formed on optical fiber 11 with a specified angle. The tip end of the filter 13 is made to reach a core 11b of the fiber, and optical fiber 12 is bonded to the side surface of the fiber 11. Incident optical signal to the fiber 11 is reflected by the filter 13 and transmitted to a core 12b of the optical fiber 12. Accordingly, a complex stage for polishing each tip end of two optical fibers slantly and bonding through a filter is no more necessary. Thus, an optical element such as optical wave-mixing or branching filter, uni- or multiple mode optical branching or coupling device, is produced inexpensively.

    • PURPOSE:To connect optical fibers without generating the positional shear between a core of an optical fiber and a core of an optical waveguide circuit by previously positioning and fixing optical fibers to be connected on a substrate for an optical waveguide circuit and forming the core and clad of the optical waveguide circuit so as to make them positionally coincide with the core and clad of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The tip of an optical fiber 1 having a core 1a and a clad 1b and previously treated at its end is positioned between optical fiber fixing guides 3 and fixed with adhesives, etc. Then an optical waveguide clad layer 4 is formed on the surface of the substrate 2 up to height coincident with the lower end of the core 1a excluding the optical fiber part 1. Then an optical waveguide core layer 5 of a part other than a required optical waveguide core pattern corresponding to the core 1a of the optical fiber 1 is removed and an optical wave guide core 5' of an optical waveguide circuit connected to the core 1a of the optical fiber 1 is formed. Then an optical waveguide clad layer 6 is formed up to the height of the upper end of the clad 1b of the optical fiber 1. Consequently, the core 1a of the optical fiber 1 can be connected to the optical waveguide core 5' of the optical waveguide circuit without generating their positional shear.
