    • PURPOSE:To stably modulate the plane of polarization with substantially no dependency on the plane of polarization of transmission light (polarized light) and with substantially no problems of a null point and to efficiently modulate the plane of polarization with a fewer light source. CONSTITUTION:The plural polarized light beams varying in wavelengths are simultaneously made incident on an optical fiber 2, subjected to modulation of the plane of polarization by a modulator 3 of the plane of polarization, and these plural polarized light beams are branched by each of the respective wavelengths. The polarized light beams of the respective wavelengths are photodetected through analyzers 4. The modulated light beams branched by each of the wavelengths described above are branched in >=2 and the respective branched light beams are photodetected through the analyzers 4 varying in the directions of axes. The respective light beams detected through the analyzers 4 are subjected to O/E conversion. Of the converted electric signals, a signal having the max. output level is selected and outputted in a selection circuit 5. Plural single-wavelength light emitters which emit the polarized light beams of the different wavelengths are used for the light source 1. A light source which emits the polarized light beams having a wavelength distribution is used for the light source 1. The >=2 light sources which emit the polarized light beams having the different wavelength distributions are used for the light source 1.

    • PURPOSE:To enable exact control of a signal applied to a control electrode and prevent a waviness or warp of an electrode, peeling-off, etc., of the insulating layer of an insulating spacer, by building up a composite type control electrode with a rotatable-type insulating spacer disposed between respective control electrodes, a spacer-position regulating member, and an elastic member which holds resiliently control electrodes in their mutually attracting direction, with a rotatable-type insulating spacer sandwiched between them. CONSTITUTION:A control electrode 3 is built up integrally on an insulating substrate 2, and forms a pair of electrodes with a control electrode 1. Each insulating spacer 4 made of an insulating material is formed in a spherical shape, a spacer-position regulating member 5 has its film thickness smaller than the diameter of the insulating spacer 4, and forms a frame in such configuration as preventing the insulating spacer 4 from being out of its predetermined position. And an elastic fixing member 9 is fixed to the side end and the fixing seat 8 of the control electrode 1 and an insulating substrate 2 and the control electrode 1 are held resiliently in their mutually attracting direction with an insulating spacer 4 sandwiched between them. Thus, in the case when any complicated thermal-strain is generated between both electrodes 1 and 3, the control electrode 1 can be moved in the direction for cancelling thermal-strain via the insulating spacer 4, so that the strain can be absorbed.
