摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the high isolation optical fiber type optical component which has cladding mode coupling loss suppressed. SOLUTION: The codoped optical fiber 1, for which the refractive index of its clad 5 is nearly equalized to that of pure quartz by covering a core 2 doped with a germanium(Ge) dopant with the clad 5 doped with both the Ge dopant and a fluorine dopant for lowering the refractive index, is provided with a formation part 6 of a fiber grating in which the core 2 and clad 5 vary periodically in refractive index along the optical fiber axis Z, and the specific refractive index difference Δ of the core 2 from the pure quartz is set about 0.3%. The fiber grating formation part 6 is given a refractive index distribution shown by characteristic curves (b) and (c), when the refractive index of Ge is increased as the fiber grating formation part 6 is formed to make small the difference between the refractive index distribution variation and propagation mode variation at the border part between the core 2 and clad 5, thereby suppressing the cladding mode coupling loss.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen the cladding mode loss which occurs on a shorter wavelength side than a light transmission blocking zone by increasing the light transmission loss of the light transmission blocking zone. SOLUTION: A face mask 5 is arranged on the front surface side of an optical fiber 1. The grating formation region of the optical fiber 1 is irradiated with UV light from an excimer laser beam source via the face mask 5 to periodically array and form the portions of a high refractive index by irradiation with the UV light and portions of low refractive index by shielding of the UV light on the core 2. The irradiation with the UV light using the face mask 5 is stopped in the mid-way stage before the increase of the refractive index, by the irradiation with the UV light attains a final target value. The face mask 5 is then removed, and the same grating formation regions are additionally irradiated with the UV light.

SOLUTION: Light from a wide band light source 2 is made incident on an optical fiber 1, and while monitoring the optical reflection characteristics of reflecting the light in a grating formation area 6 by a light spectrum analyzer, the grating formation area 6 is irradiated with ultraviolet light from a laser through a cylindrical lens 9 and a phase mask 13 by a predetermined energy density and a grating is formed. After measured grating characteristics reach a predetermined first reference value, by varying the relative position between the lens 9 and the laser and between the lens 9 and the optical fiber 1 as indicated in (b), the energy density of the laser beam is made lower than the above density and the grating is formed. When the measured characteristics of the grating reach a predetermined second reference value closer to a target characteristic value than the first reference value, grating formation is ended.

The entire surface of the optical fiber 1 is irradiated with the laser beam for several minutes to several tens minutes without using the face mask from the rear surface side of the plane P inclusive of the core 1a. The gratings 1c periodically changed in its refractive index at the prescribed length along the longitudinal direction are formed on the front surface side of the plane P inclusive of the core 1a.

Thus, the side core 4 which has the smaller refractive index than the cladding 5 is provided around the center core 3 and then a propagation mode in which light is propagated while confined to the core 2 is made small. Then, the cladding coupling loss, due to the coupling of a reflection mode in which the light reflected by the fiber grating formation part 6 leaks out to the clad 5 and propagates and the propagation mode, is suppressed.
