      SOLUTION: An edge detection method detects edge pieces by searching for all search lines for filling an image in the direction at the right angle to the edge from an end of the image, when lines in which the edge pieces can not be detected exist, detects the edge pieces by searching for all the search lines from the vicinity of the center of the image to the end of the image. A linear edge is determined from the edge pieces. A plurality of edge candidates are determined from the edge pieces to all the search lines, and the optimal candidate is selected from among the edge candidates. Ruled lines are extracted from the document in the image, and the optimal candidate is selected on the basis of comparison with the ruled lines.
