    • PURPOSE: To test airtight properties of a sample at low costs in a short time, by storing the sample in one of two airtight chambers communicating with each other via a U-shaped communication pipe, introducing the compressed air, closing an air valve, and measuring the difference of liquid levels in the communication pipe. CONSTITUTION: A liquid manometer 5 provided with airtight chambers 3, 4, a transparent U-shaped communication pipe 51 having front ends opened to the airtight chambers 3, 4 and a scale 53 for measuring the difference (h) of liquid levels in the communication pipe 51 constitutes the airtight testing apparatus. A sample 2 is stored in one airtight chamber 3, a lid part 32 is closed to seal the airtight chamber 3, air valves 64, 65 are opened to introduce the compressed air to the airtight chambers 3, 4 and then the valves 64, 65 are closed after the liquid levels in the communication pipe 51 are returned into the balanced state. The pressure is kept in the balanced state if the sample 2 has no defect. However, if the sample 2 is poorly airtight, the compressed air in the airtight chamber 3 invades the sample 2, thereby lowering the air pressure in the airtight chamber 3. As a result, the difference (h) is brought about between liquid levels in the communication pipe 51. In this manner, airtight properties of the sample 2 can be tested without letting in a liquid or the like into the sample 2.
