      SOLUTION: A polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 is inserted into an optical fiber hole 12a of a square ferrule 12 for a single coated fiber, in a manner that the direction of the polarization axis corresponds to the side of a square cross section of the square ferrule 12, and is then fixed with an adhesive 13 to constitute the ferrule-attached polarization maintaining optical fiber 11. The manufacturing method is such that the polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 is held by a fiber holder, with the direction of the polarization axis oriented as prescribed, that the fiber holder and a ferrule holder are housed together in a guiding groove of a guiding member, wherein the ferrule holder holds the square ferrule 12 with the adhesive filled in the optical fiber hole 12a, and that the fiber holder and the ferrule holder are made to approach to each other, with the polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 inserted into the optical fiber hole 12a. Since the direction of the polarization axis can be adjusted without rotating the polarization maintaining optical fiber 1, the polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 is hardly damaged by a sharp edge 12c at the entrance of the optical fiber hole 12a.
