A separating pressure adjusting device 250 adjusts the separating pressure to be given to the paper sheet 100 by the separating roller 18 and the second separating surface 32b.       SOLUTION: In this paper separator 200, a separation pad 32 is formed by an elastic material. A first supporting member 34 and a second supporting member 35 are arranged between the separation pad 32 and the first supporting member 34. A third supporting member 36 is formed by an elastic material being softer than the elastic material of the separation pad 32 and is arranged between the separation pad 32 and the first supporting member 34 on the upstream side in the direction of paper conveyance more than the second supporting member 35 to form a space part together with the separation pad 32, the first supporting member 34, and the second supporting member 35. A separation roller comes into pressure-contact with the separation pad 32 to curve the separation pad 32 toward the space part. The second supporting member 35 is fixed to the separation pad 32 and is slidably abutted on the first supporting member 34.
