    • PURPOSE:To obtain a high-purity purified compound in a high yield while inhibiting polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate by neutralizing glycidyl methacrylate with a sulfone groupcontaining compound, reducing high-boiling compounds and subsequently purifying it. CONSTITUTION:An ester interchange reaction is conducted between glycidol and methyl methacrylate in the presence of a base catalyst (e.g. lithium acetate) to synthesize glycidyl methacrylate (hereinafter abbreviated GMA). The resultant GMA is neutralized with a sulfone group-containing compound (preferably p- toluenesulfonic acid) of the formula (R is an alkyl or an aromatic group) and, after reducing high-boiling compounds, it is purified. The removal of generated neutralized salts and high-boiling compounds is carried out preferably by adding a sulfone group-containing compound while vigorously stirring unneutralized crude GMA and subsequently distilling it under 1 to 30Torr using an evaporator having a short residence time, e.g. a film evaporator. In addition, purification of the neutralized GMA is preferrably carried out by using a distillation column low in pressure loss and having low actual steps.

    • PURPOSE: To carry out the catalytic reaction in isomerizing styrene oxide in the vapor phase by the reaction to obtain the titled substance, by using a highly active catalyst consisting of a sulfate of Mn, Fe, Co or Ni without showing deterioration in activity for a long time.

The amount of the metallic sulfate to be supported is 2W95wt%. The catalyst is prepared by sprinkling an aqueous solution of the metallic sulfate on a heated carrier, drying the impregnated carrier, and calcining the dried carrier at a high temperature (300W500°C), etc.

    • PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, artificial sweeteners, etc., in high purity, by isomerizing styrene oxide at a high temperature in a reactor filled with a catalyst suspended in an organic solvent having high boiling point, and distilling in a distillation column connected directly to the reactor. CONSTITUTION:Styrene oxide is supplied in vapor state or liquid state to the bottom of a reactor filled with an organic solvent having high boiling point (e.g. liquid paraffin) containing suspended catalyst such as synthetic silica-alumina and made to react at 160-220 deg.C under reduced pressure of 5-50mmHg at a temperature maintained above the temperature to evaporate the starting raw material and the reaction product until the conversion of the raw material reaches >=99.5%. A part of the organic solvent having high boiling point is extracted continuously or intermittently from the reactor and the reactor is replenished with the corresponding amount of regenerated or fresh solvent and catalyst. The objective compound can be obtained from the distillation column connected directly to the reactor. EFFECT:The polymerization loss of the objective compound having high reactivity can be suppressed and a colorless product having sufficiently high commercial value can be produced.
