    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal compound having an excellent balance of physical properties such as exhibiting a negative dielectric constant anisotropy together with having comparatively high clear point or a small viscosity, a proper optical anisotropy and compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds, etc., by solving problems that conventional compounds exhibiting a negative dielectric constant anisotropy although exhibiting a negative dielectric constant anisotropy of relatively large numeric value are not appropriate in the balance of properties as a liquid crystal material because having a low clear point or a large viscosity. SOLUTION: The invention relates to a compound represented by formula (1) or (2). In the formula, each of R a and R b is a hydrogen atom or 1-20C alkyl; each of A 1 , A 11 , A 12 , A 2 , A 21 and A 22 is a cyclic group; each of Y, W, Z 11 , Z 12 , Z 2 , Z 21 and Z 22 is a bond group; and each of j, k, m, n, p and q is 0 or 1 with the proviso that the sum thereof is 1 to 3.
