SOLUTION: The catalyst contains acidic oxide-deposited alumina, which is obtained by selectively depositing on alumina an acidic oxide consisting of a metal oxide having the acidity higher than that of alumina, in a carrier thereof. A basic point of the alumina in the acidic oxide-deposited alumina is neutralized by the acidic oxide. Therefore, SO 3 or SO 4 is restrained from being adsorbed on the basic point and being accumulated on the catalyst.
