    • PURPOSE:To improve purity and yield of the subject compound as a synthetic intermediate of medicines, etc., from a raw material as such as 3-methyl-2- butanone or 2,4-dimethyl-2-butanone by using a specific chlorinating agent of a low cost. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I or formula II (R to R are 1-20C alkyl) is used as a raw material and reacted by using an aqueous solution of ferric chloride as a chlorinating agent preferably at 70-90 deg.C. Then, the objective compound expressed by formula III or formula IV is isolated by azeotropy with water after finishing the reaction. Besides, preferably, after isolation of the objective compound, hydrogen chloride in the reaction mixture is distilled away and chlorine is blown into the system to recover ferric chloride. Concentration of ferric chloride in the aqueous solution before the reaction is 10-60% and using amount of the ferric chloride is 2.0-4.0mol for 1mol of the compound expressed by formula I and 4.0-8.0mol for 1mol of the compound expressed by formula II.
