    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst which has high decomposition activity and gives a high intermediate fraction yield by using a catalyst having specified values of the residual ratio, etc. of a tetradentate aluminum atom which forms zeolite in a hydrocracking catalyst in which active metal components are supported on a carrier containing faujasite type zeolite. SOLUTION: A hydrocracking catalyst which is used in a hydrocracking process for converting heavy oil into light oil which is preferable in view of environment is prepared by a method in which active metal components are supported on a carrier comprising faujasite type zeolite and porous inorganic oxide. In this process, faujasite type zeolite which has a Na2 O content of 0.5-wt.% or less and meets formulas I and II is used. In the formulas, (R Al) is the residual ratio (%) of a four-coordination aluminum atom, (Na2 ) is a Na2 O content (wt.%) of zeolite, (N Al-1) and (N Al-2) are the number of tetradentate aluminum atoms in a unit lattice of zeolite in a starting raw material and the alkali-treated raw material, respectively.
