Thus, temperature management of a light source is appropriately performed to prevent excess pre-heating, the temperature fluctuation of the light source is suppressed and a high definition read image can be acquired.

When the scanner unit is mounted on a recording device in a pre-heating mode, weak current is permitted to flow LED 13, resistance and a transistor(Tr) 21 and heat-keeping and pre-heating are execute. Tr 23 is being turned off. In the reading mode, strong current is permitted to flow through Tr 23 by the command of IC 20. Thus, LED is stabilized and, moreover, the white reference value is made to be stable.

SOLUTION: When an A4-size original is read, the original paper is fed by the length equivalent to (128-48) pixel width, i.e., 80-pixel width after the read of current one band (128-pixel width) is finished by a scanner unit. Then, the 48-pixel width of the lower part of the current one band is overlapped and read when the next one band is read. The band data included in the lower part are stored in a memory until the read of the next one band and the averaged processing of the band data which are overlapped and read, are finished. In the case of a color original, the band data which are overlapped and read and as much as three colors are temporarily stored. For instance, the averaged band data R0 can be driven out of R0=(R1+R2)/2. Thus, the driven band data become the original read image data.

Then the signals detected by a line sensor 18 are amplified by an amplifier 19 and inputted to an A/D converter 20. Thus, the recorded data are converted into the digital data of 8 bits in each pixel, and an image processing IC 21 applies the shading correction, binarization, etc., to the digital data. The processed digital data are serially sent to the image recorder main body synchronously with a data clock.

When a high resolution read mode is set to the read mode, a compression processing variable table in response to the type of original is selected and a selected compression processing variable table is transferred to a host computer (S3→S5→S6). Then a difference of adjacent pixel data is calculated (S7), and a representative value Q and decoding data after decompression are calculated by referencing the compression processing variable table (S8). Then a Huffman code H corresponding to the representative value Q is detected by referencing the compression processing variable table and contents of a Huffman code register are updated (S9). Then, the Huffman code is transferred to the host computer (S10), after decompressing the compressed data by the host computer (S10), the contents are stored in a memory section and a hard disk (S12, S13) and the processing is finished.
