    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reader that can obtain a high definition read image by setting electric power in the pre-heating among plural powers and setting a pre-heating time to be supplied with the set power based on the situations of power supplied to a light source before that. SOLUTION: When pre-heating processing is started, an interrupt time is calculated from the value of an interrupt timer and a pre-heating time is found from a conversion table of the pre-heating time (S 902). Pre-heating is started (S903). Whether or not a pre-heating time passes over forty seconds or in finished is discriminated (S904). Whether or not an input of a white reference request exists is discriminated (S905) and further whether or not an input of a read request exists is discriminated (S906). When all requests do not exist, it is discriminated that the pre-heating time is finished (S907) and the pre-heating processing is finished. Thus, temperature management of a light source is appropriately performed to prevent excess pre-heating, the temperature fluctuation of the light source is suppressed and a high definition read image can be acquired.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a data transfer time from being different not so much as compared with an original size difference without requiring a large capacity memory at the time of transferring data by reading an original size and compressing data in accordance with the size before transferring it to an external part. SOLUTION: Reflection light from an original 10 irradiated by an LED light source 13 is detected and amplified by a sensor and, after that, digitally converted data is processed for such as shading correction or thresholding, etc., by picture processing correcting IC 20. When reading up to A3 printing is selected, CPU with built-in printer becomes a data compressing mode before data is transferred to a host computer. The predicted value of the picture element is calculated from upper part and left part picture element data of the picture element in interest in digitally converted data and a difference value with the picture element is quantized by a non-linear quantizing table which is previously and optimally set. In this case, the eight bits of the table are made to be five, more than that, or less than that so that a picture data quantity is made to be 5/8, more than that or less than that.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the illuminance of an original illumination light source at a lighting initial stage, to set a white reference value to be a stable value and obtain a read image with high image quality by providing a circuit for pre-heating the light source in the electric circuit of a scanner unit. SOLUTION: A scanner unit case 15 is provided with an electric circuit configuration substrate 12 inside of it. The configuration substrate 12 is provided with an LED light source 13 irradiating an original, a photoelectric converting sensor 14, a lens, and IC 20 for circuit control, an A/D converter and an image processing, etc. In the light source LED 13, a circuit for heat-keeping and preheating an a reading circuit are prepared and changed-over by IC 20. When the scanner unit is mounted on a recording device in a pre-heating mode, weak current is permitted to flow LED 13, resistance and a transistor(Tr) 21 and heat-keeping and pre-heating are execute. Tr 23 is being turned off. In the reading mode, strong current is permitted to flow through Tr 23 by the command of IC 20. Thus, LED is stabilized and, moreover, the white reference value is made to be stable.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read images with high quality without increasing the memory capacity of an image reading cartridge by preparing a reading means and a 1st storage means in the cartridge that can be freely attached and detached. SOLUTION: When an image reader is used as an image recorder, a recording cartridge 101 is connected to a head connection part 2. Then a controller 5 receives the recorded data and stores the processed dot data in a memory 25. The recorded data are serially sent to the cartridge 101 synchronously with a recording clock, and the characters, images, etc., are recorded in dots on the recording paper. When the image reader is used in its original function, a scanner cartridge 102 is connected to the part 2. Then the signals detected by a line sensor 18 are amplified by an amplifier 19 and inputted to an A/D converter 20. Thus, the recorded data are converted into the digital data of 8 bits in each pixel, and an image processing IC 21 applies the shading correction, binarization, etc., to the digital data. The processed digital data are serially sent to the image recorder main body synchronously with a data clock.
