    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display which is of a dry type having a fast response performance, of a simple structure, inexpensive, and excellent in stability, and is also capable of displaying halftone utilizing the display memory property.
      SOLUTION: When forming an image desired to display, the image display provided with an image display board for displaying the image by enclosing two kinds of particles having different colors and electrification characteristics, i.e., positively electrified electrons 5 in white and negatively electrified electrons 6 in black between a transparent substrate 1 and a counter substrate 2, and applying an electric field to the particles 5, 6 from electrode pairs constituted of display electrodes 3 arranged on the transparent substrate 1 and the counter electrodes 4 arranged on the counter substrate 2, performs halftone display in which the particles 5, 6 are mixed at a desired ratio by adjusting the electric field strength to be applied across the display electrodes and the counter electrodes according to the display density, and also applies a reset electric field for resetting the mixture state of the particles 5, 6 before the halftone display.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display unit which can reduce density unevenness and maintain display picture quality as an image display unit which is a dry type, has fast response performance and a simple structure, and is inexpensive and superior in stability.
      SOLUTION: The image display unit is provided with an image display sheet which seals at least two types of particles different in color and electrification characteristics into between two substrates, at least one of which being transparent, and gives electric field to the particles from an electrode pair consisting of electrodes provided on one or both of the substrates to send the particles flying and display an image. In a first embodiment, the process of forming an image to be displayed comprises the step of applying to between electrodes an electric field pattern in a direction of a particle A flying to a displaying-side substrate to form an image, and the step of applying a pattern reverse (negative) to the above pattern in an electric field direction of a particle B, different in color and electrification characteristics from the particle A, flying to a display-side substrate to form an image, whereby an image deleting step prior to the step of forming an image to be displayed can be omitted.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device which is fast in responsiveness, is a dry system, is inexpensive with a simple structure, has excellent stability and can read out the image display states of displayed images.
      SOLUTION: The image display device includes an image display plate which is formed by sealing two or more kinds of particles (5 and 6) varying in colors and electrostatic charge characteristics between two substrates (1 and 2), at least one thereof being transparent, and displays the images by applying electric fields to the particles from an electrode pair consisting of the electrodes disposed at one or both of the substrates and by allowing the particles to scatter and move. The device reads out the image display state by detecting the scattering and moving currents generated when the particles in the pixels scatter and move. More specifically, the device is so constituted as to perform the reading out of the image display state by writing the images of the black color over the entire part or colors to the displayed images, and by determining the display densities of the respective pixels from the integrated values of the scattering and moving currents flowing in the respective pixels.
