The medium set in an insertion hole is fed irrespective of the presence or absence of information of a host controller, the carriage is moved, one side end of the medium is detected by the sensor, and then the position of the end of the medium is calculated. The feeding information is held. When information is received from the host controller and the feeding information exists, the moving distance of the carriage from a printing position to the designated medium for the information to a position for the printing is calculated, and then the printing operation is immediately started. When the feeding information dose not exist, the printer is made to be in a condition of waiting the insertion of the medium.
